Visby is a medieval town with a city wall from the13th century, a network of streets and rowed buildings from the time of the Hanseatic league. So walk 100m in in almost any direction and you have a history-oriented sightseeing tour. In town, you are sort of supposed to see at least

Some photos from Visby.

It is probably not a good idea to rent a car and drive around the town (remember this is a medieval town so streets were buildt before cars - or parking were invented. Driving a car in the countryside is basically all right.

My personal recommendation: rent a bike. There are single bikes, tandems, baby rikshas etc. available from approximately 6 euros/day. And there are many nice places to visit 2-15 km from Visby. Plan a picnic to a cliff !

Map of the targets above.

Gotland has great beaches but in September typical temperatures are 10 to 15 C,so only some of us like to swim there. But remember to look for fossiles ! The three F's in Gotland: flora, fauna, fossiles. The scenery in impressive: bare limestone soil, moors with open pine forest, coastlines with steep hill brows, cobbled and sandy beaches, strange rock formations ("Rauks"), and blazing meadow land. The limestone feeds special kinds of flowers, for instance most of Sweden's orchid species are seen here, but September is not the best season for wild flowers.

On a rainy day, the indoor pool could be a good idea. It has a 25m pool and a sauna). Their opening hours are different every weekday so have a look at the timetable first.
